Do you know the Camper’s Code?
Developed collaboratively by a dozen B.C.-based organizations, the Camper’s Code provides nine rules to help create a safe and enjoyable camping trip.
The code includes pledges to plan ahead, control pets, respect other campers by keeping noise levels down, and keep a clean campsite to avoid attracting wildlife.
“The goal of the Camper’s Code is to build more awareness about desired campers’ behaviours, educate new campers on acceptable behaviours and promote the sustainability of British Columbia as a destination for future generations to enjoy,” Jaime Cox, president of BC Lodging and Campgrounds Association, said in a statement.
Here’s a look at the Code:
- I will plan ahead and be prepared – Even if you’re car camping or hiking close to town, anything can happen in wild spaces. Stay safe by adhering to the three Ts: Trip Plan, Train, Take the essentials.
- I will respect wildlife – Many animals become stressed or defensive when approached. Getting close to and feeding wildlife is detrimental to animals, their survival, and possibly to you. Instead, use binoculars to marvel at them from afar – safely!
- I will respect others – Respect your camping neighbours by keeping noise levels low and adhering to posted quiet hours.
- I will respect staff and signs – Both are here to help; adhere to their guidance so everyone can stay safe.
- I will control my pet(s) – Pets can negatively impact trails, aggravate park visitors, contaminate natural resources and impact wildlife. Choose pet-friendly parks; bag pet’s waste and pack it out – every time; and keep your pet on a leash, for their safety and the safety of wildlife.
- I will not litter – Simply put, littering isn’t acceptable. Put all garbage in marked garbage/waste bins. If none is available, pack it out.
- I will store food safely – Food and scented items can attract wild animals, potentially leading to personal injury and wildlife being killed. Store all food in a wildlife-proof container or in a hard-sided vehicle.
- I will practice fire safety – Prevent human-caused wildfires by practicing these three essential campfire safety rules: Respect fire bans; If fires are permitted, never leave it unattended, and if you’re unable to watch the fire, put it out. Extinguish fires completely
– no smouldering and cold to the touch.
