The best compliment you can give a chef? Returning for seconds! Oh, and to tell your friends about the experience.
It’s a concept well familiar to outdoor enthusiasts exploring the Kamloops region, where the endless views, crisp winter air and the crunch of snow beneath your boots combine for a getaway you’ll be telling your friends and family about for winters to come.
Does a sunset skate across frozen Inks Lake tempt your inner traveller? How about climbing to new heights – and panoramic views – along the Tower Trail in Kenna Cartwright Nature Park? No matter how you choose to explore, the journey will be as much of the experience as the destination!
And we haven’t even landed on the best part – sharing your favourite elements of the day’s adventures with your special someone in front of a warm fire, with a cool craft beer or local wine in hand. Then, over a delicious dinner, you’ll plan for tomorrow in the ‘Loops, because the best days – like the best meals – call you back for more…
The recipe for a memorable winter getaway
No matter the time of year, good food is a vital part of any memorable vacation, but winter brings some definite rewards.
Through Feb. 9, the BC Restaurant and Food Association’s Dine Around Interior/Okanagan 2023 offers the opportunity to savour delicious local cuisine through specially priced three-course menus and optional wine or beer pairings.
The Brownstone, one of Kamloops’ favourite restaurants, will be front-and-centre this year with its celebrated Bacon-Wrapped Elk Meatloaf – featured on Food Network Canada’s Big Food Bucket List. Boasting an ambiance that’s at once warm and elegant, but never stuffy, The Brownstone is a downtown Kamloops landmark, set in the historic 1904 Canadian Bank of Commerce building, once the workplace of poet Robert Service.
For craft beer fans, The Noble Pig Brewhouse is Kamloops’ first microbrewery, combining house-made craft beer, brewed by Nick Murphy, with a unique beer fusion and scratch kitchen cuisine lead by Chef Jared Summers.
This unpretentious neighbourhood spot offers a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere and after a day exploring the unique, locally owned shops and attractions of Kamloops’ inviting downtown, the perfect winter meal awaits: their hearty, braised beef stroganoff. As an added bonus for locavore enthusiasts, the beef and Fratelli noodles are both local!
For a wide selection of craft beer and cider, it doesn’t get any better than Red Beard Café – part pub, part café, part restaurant, but always a place to make great memories with good friends.
Pouring from 18 rotating taps, not to mention their craft cocktails and Third Wave coffee, you’re sure to find the perfect accompaniment to your brunch, lunch or dinner, all prepared fresh and from scratch.
Of special mention for winter visitors is Red Beard’s hand-made wontons. A labour-intensive treat, you won’t find these on the summer menu – they’re only for winter, and feature some innovative combinations. This year’s rhubarb venison wonton, for example, plays on the classic sweet and sour flavours with local rhubarb adding terrific flavour to the venison – a guilty pleasure you needn’t feel guilty about!
Before embarking on a new day’s adventures, indulge in a late brunch at Maurya’s Rest.Bar.Banquet, where since 2004, Dilip and Preeti have delighted locals and visitors alike with their passion for exceptional cuisine.
Be sure to check out their newly launched brunch menu, where the Paradise Paneer Toast is inspired by childhood memories of Sunday lunches with family. Delectable dishes with cheese and omelette were particular favourites, offering savoury and umami delights – delicacies they’ve recreated at Maurya’s.
