The Town of Sylvan Lake in Central Alberta has a number of events planned for this year’s National Indigenous Day Celebrations on June 21.
Activities include a concert at Centennial Park featuring Indigenous and Metis artists from across the province, a Powwow Showcase put on by Powwow Times, Indigenous games, an Indigenous vendors market and more.
Two new elements will also join this year’s celebrations, says culture and tourism supervisor Channelle Brooker.
“Local Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Clare Butterfly will be conducting two medicine walks at the Healing Hub at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to discover some traditional medicines that Indigenous people have been using since time immemorial that we can all use today.”
The concert, which runs from 4 p.m. to around 10:30 p.m., will feature many artists, including Winddancer Waskewitch, Brianna Lizotte, Trent Agecoutay, Rellik, Brettyn Rose and Kaeley Jade.
“Events like these build bridges between people and foster a better community for all of us. It’s also going to be a great family activity with Indigenous games and activities. And what better way to celebrate the summer solstice than dancing in Centennial Park as the sun goes down,” Brooker says.
Depending on weather, activities may be moved to inside the NexSource Centre.
“Always check the Visit Sylvan Lake website if you have questions about the weather and where the event will be happening,” Brooker says, noting the event is is free for anyone to attend.
“We hope to see a diverse crowd of all ages there.”
