4th annual Lumby Outhouse Races races return to North Okanagan Jan. 26

For an outhouse experience you’ll actually enjoy, head to the North Okanagan community of Lumby Jan. 26!

For the fourth straight year, the best outhouses from across the region will race their way down the snowy plains of Lumby, with this year’s races moved from West Salmon Trail’s parking lot to the bigger Oval Park.

Organizer Darren Schmidt said last year that the event was at capacity and was looking for a bigger venue. He got his wish.

The event, which had 20 outhouses registered a year ago, will take place on Sunday, Jan. 26 at a time still to be announced.

Teams of three come together to build a three-sided faux outhouse mounted on two sliding devices, such as skis or sheet metal. Two teammates push the outhouse using two-foot-long two-by-fours attached to the structure. The third member enjoys the ride, seated on their throne.

Additionally, the Lumby and District Chamber of Commerce will take over hosting duties from the Monashee Trails Society.

Last year’s winner, Butt Hut, was the recipient of the golden plunger, as it bested TP Electric in the final.

The event is an effort to get more people outside in winter.

“We just wanted to see people smiling,” Schmidt said in an interview last year. “We thought that Lumby would rally around the event. Thinking about our community, as we have a lot of hardworking people, we thought that they would come together and put together some creative entries, and we have certainly seen that over the last couple of years. “
