If you’re a whitewater junkie and considering rafting in the Rockies, you’re going to want to check out rafting on the Kicking Horse River near Golden, B.C.
A number of commercial rafting operations work on the river, which ranges from class 3 rapids to as high as class six on some stretches.
So, how did the river get it’s name? In 1858, explorer James Hector, a surgeon and geologist on the Palliser Expedition, received a vicious kick to the chest while trying to deal with a horse that had fallen into the water.
Although injured, Hector survived and finished the expedition.
The Kicking Horse is popular with kayakers and canoeists, but caution is urged. Be sure to talk to local guides and experts before attempting the river.
