The Washington State Department of Transportation has reopened State Highway 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway, for the 2025 season.
The scenic highway passes through North Cascades National Park, with the opportunity to experience the old growth forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain scenery, notes the National Parks Service, recommending drivers allow at least an hour to enjoy the beautiful, winding road – and to add more time for stops along the way.
In addition to a stunning drive, the route provides access to a variety of recreation opportunities, including hiking and camping.
Among the suggested highlights are:
- North Cascades Visitor Center (Mile 119.9) – Explore exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the park and view the Picket Range from the Sterling Munro Boardwalk.
- Newhalem (Mile 120.5) – Visit the Skagit Information Center, tour the Gorge Powerhouse and enjoy the forests and creeks of Newhalem on a variety of easy trails.
- Gorge Creek Falls (Mile 123.4) – Walk the short, interpretive trail to an overlook and take in views of the waterfall, gorge and dam.
Diablo Lake Overlook (Mile 131.7) – Enjoy stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountain peaks.
Happy Creek Forest Walk (Mile 134.3) – Take a peaceful, shaded stroll through a moss-covered forest.
Ross Lake Overlooks (Mile 136) – Enjoy views over Ross Lake.
North Cascades Highway travelers should plan for weather conditions, turn on headlights and stay alert for other vehicles on the road. There is no cell service through the mountain passes, the department reminded travelers in a Facebook post Tuesday. Most United States Forest Service and National Park Service facilities are still closed at this time.
Travelers may encounter maintenance or project work on the highway throughout the season. The transportation department has a real-time travel conditions map on its website.
