The snow is falling and the time has come for Boo the Grizzly Bear to rest his weary head after a summer of fun in the sun.
The Grizzly Bear Refuge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is preparing for their celebrity to enter his winter dormancy.
According to the refuge, when temperatures drop this period grizzly bears can slow their heart rate to about eight beats per minute, their respiratory rate to about one to three breaths per minute, and body temp to about 31°C.
“The bears have a shivering reflex that allows them to keep their muscles working during sustained inactivity,” the refuge says.
In Golden, bears will start to emerge again in late March and early April.
The refuge is closed for the season and will open again in the spring of 2024, however, the refuge will keep Boo’s fans updated on how the social media icon’s slumber is progressing.
The grizzly lives in a 20-acre area where he plays, forages and explores within this natural mountainside habitat just like his wild cousins.
