Border-breaking Juan de Fuca Corridor opens new tourism era for Washington state and Vancouver Island

A groundbreaking new tourism corridor on Vancouver Island is the first of its kind to cross the border into the United States.

The Juan de Fuca Corridor aims to create unique travel experiences by connecting tourism organizations and promoting tourism in Canada and the U.S.

The corridor will connect regions between Beecher Bay and Port Renfrew in B.C. to Port Angeles and Neah Bay in Washington state, including Olympic National Park and Seattle. The tourism strategy program aims to enhance the tourism industry in the Capital Region District and surrounding areas, including First Nations communities.

Other corridors announced by Destination Canada include:

• Cycle Ontario and Quebec

• Field to Fork: Saskatchewan Manitoba Agritourism

• Northern Sky Corridor (Alberta, Northwest Territories)

The Sooke Region Tourism Association is excited to be part of the Juan de Fuca Tourism Corridor initiative, said president Steven Eckart.

“This project represents a valuable opportunity to showcase Sooke’s unique natural beauty and vibrant cultural heritage while ensuring that tourism growth aligns with the values of our community,” he said.

The Juan de Fuca Partnership is based on the strong historical and cultural connections between the two regions, said PNWER president Cindy Ryu.

“We look forward to working with our partners on both sides of the border, particularly our Indigenous and Tribal communities, to ensure that we maintain the integrity of our abundant yet fragile natural ecosystems and showcase the rich history and culture of our region. We are excited to explore the opportunities for responsible, sustainable, and resilient tourism growth in our region,” she said.

According to Destination Canada, 16.2 million travellers from the U.S. are expected to visit Canada next year and spend $13.7 billion. Destination Canada is a federal Crown corporation.
