Gulf Island Seaplanes has taken over seaplane services between Maple Bay Marina on Vancovuer Island and Vancouver Airport.
The Indigenous-owned seaplane company began operating the service on Oct. 25, and will offer two round-trips a day during the winter months.
The company, which is owned by Sean and Alison Evans, provides regular float-plane service to and from Vancouver Airport and Gabriola Island, Hornby Island and now Maple Bay, as well as a private charter service throughout coastal B.C.
Harbour Air had provided a float-plane service between Maple Bay and Vancouver, but shut it down in September due to a “persistent softening in demand” the company said in a press release.
Sean said Maple Bay Marina reached out to Gulf Island Seaplanes to take over the service soon after.
“We’re starting with two round (trip) flights a day between Vancouver Airport and Maple Bay when it’s less busy, and we plan to ramp that up in the spring, as well as offer a service between Maple Bay and downtown Vancouver,” he said.
